Commission FAQs
What is a commission?
A commission is a custom painting created specifically for you in the size, style, and color palette that works for your unique space. Perhaps you've seen one of my paintings that you really love, but you could use a different size (smaller or bigger) than the one you found. Perhaps you have a pattern or fabric in your decor, and you’d like to echo the same colors on your walls. Perhaps you have a special place or event you’d like to commemorate. Or perhaps you connected with an artwork only to find out it was already sold when you went to make a purchase. These are all occasions for which I’ve painted commissions.
What does the process look like?
Typically, an email, then a phone call gets the ball rolling. Perhaps you've already seen one of my paintings you are already drawn towards and you'd like to riff on that theme, or perhaps you have a photo of a place that is special to you. Sometime a home visit (if local) or a video chat can be helpful if you’re not sure about some of the decisions about size, palette, etc. Sometimes use of a photo editor program is helpful to do a virtual staging in your space. I work through a commission “worksheet” with you that covers the decisions about the painting. I also go over an agreement/contract as to completion dates, costs, etc.

What is the committement/cost?
I've recently restructured my commission charges to reflect how I personally would like to work with an artist. (Aren't we all a little risk averse?) I now ask only for a 25% refundable deposit to secure a place in my schedule. (I have gallery space and yearly shows which provide me with other options to sell work, so I think this is a win-win for us all.) The balance is due after the painting has fully met your desires and expectations prior to final delivery. Both the client or the artist can terminate the contract at anytime. Contact me via email or phone and I'd be happy to give you a quote.

What is the timeline?
I can give you a rough time estimate by email. I provide a more solid completion date at the time we go over the agreement. Your refundable deposit secures your place in my schedule, and I work on commissions in the order in which they are received. I also schedule a check-in time with you midway through the project to make sure your vision for the painting is being met.
Typically, I like to give each painting a month's time. That is not exclusive time however. Often I will work on more than one painting at a time. There are many layers to my work, and I like one week of “percolation time” for each painting – time and space to make sure the painting is working well on all levels.
What about framing?
I think my pieces look best framed and typically frame each painting in a contemporary floater frame. I deliver or ship paintings wall ready with hanging hardware and wire installed. Frame costs are additional to the painting but reasonable (eg 24 x 48 around $150, 24 x 24 around $85, solid fir black frame.) I buy my frames directly from the maker. See my worksheet for a description of some options. You are always welcome to purchase a painting unframed as well.
What about shipping?
Shipping is available. I can provide an estimate on request. Local delivery is complementary or we can meet at an agreed upon location.
